Hands On Adjustments

Hands on adjustments are such an integral and beautiful part of yoga teaching.
However it’s really important to give our students the opportunity to adjust themselves, developing their practice.
As teachers, if we want to emphasize alignment, we need to start with accurate verbal cues. Later we can indicate or adjust without touching, just like in this clip (this will only work when our student can actually see the indication).
Later we can offer an adjustment for the skin - the skin is our biggest sensory organ (as yogis we want to develop the sensitivity of our skin). And only finally, if all of that doesn’t seem to work, we might offer a full hands on adjustment. In this hands on adjustment the student’s job will be to remember this newly adjusted body position, so their practice will create learning and self-sufficiency, rather than dullness and dependency on the teacher’s touch.
In restorative asanas - it’s a completely different story….

Enjoy 😊
